'' This Blessed House by Jhumpa Lahiri
This book of Jhumpa Lahiri is comprised by 9 diffirent and special stories which each of them treats diffirent themes but the one that seemed more interesting to me was "This Blessed House".It's a story whose main themes are love, marriage, dissatisfaction and communication.By all the stories, we understand the cultures and traditions of Hindu people which some of them is marriage.Indian people tend to get married by this regulated marriage without even knowing each other.Twinkle and Sanjev have known each other only for two months and they got married. But this isn't the only reason why they have some contradicts within their relationship.Twinkle is the opposite of the traditional woman an Indian guy wants to marry with. She is not the kind of a house-wife ,she doesn't know how to cook and stuff. But Twinkle is such a bright, cheerful, interesting, and curious girl while Sanjev is the opposite, he is quite calm, serious and monotonous. There is the clashing of two diffirent worlds and personalities. The title is related with the events of the new house the bought and started to live in.The previous renters were christians and the house is full of christian statues and pictures.Twinkle as a curious person finds these very interesting but Sanjev can't stand them as he is Hindu.Twinkle even collects them as an museum and tells all their guests at the party they organised in their home, how interesting and beautiful they were They start to argue also about this situation. But in the end Sanjev is wearing Christian relics and came to realising that it were these little things of stubborness and cuiosity that made him fall in love even more with Twinkle. The story is about a couple who seem they have a healthy life and marriage but even little things or diffirent peespectives can be obstacles to a happy relationship.

"Interpreter of Maladies" by Jumpha Lahiri.
"Interpreter of Maladies" is a book which has nine different stories and each one has its own importance. Is a book which with its stories represents the Indian community at its best.
"A real Durwan" is a short story which talks about an old woman called Boori Ma, who is lonely, she has no family, because she has lost it years before. She is also very poor. She "works" as a doorkeeper in a building. She maintains it and she makes it look clean. All the residents of the building like her, but also sometimes she is treated very unjustly. They have trust her the bulding to be safe and good looking. Boori Ma has a big and beautiful heart and because one night she wanted to go for a walk, to be out of that bulding only one time, there the whole story has a turning point when some thieves steal a sink, which a resident has bought for the bulding and all the residents put the fault on the doorkeeper, Boori Ma. As a result of this, she is thrown out by them and the she is COMPLETELY lonely. The main theme of this story is irony, because there are things promised to mrs. Boori Ma, which although she is thrown out, they never give her those "promised things". Except the fact that she is very old and poor and at the end also thrown out, she continues to be storng, as she always used to.

Week XIV-XV
The story is quite meaningful about relationships in family. The story begins on a note of conflict. That both Mr.and Mrs Das are relucant to accompany their doughters subtly alludes to their selfishness and negligence. That Mrs.Das does not bother to hold her doughter's hand also suggests the distance between mother and child.Mr and Mrs das apparent youth implicitly raises the question of whether they are mature enough to occupy the role caretakers towards their children. The clear cut idea of the story as I percept is to appriciate much enough the family metters. To be comprehensive, and communicative towards each other. This components might be the key of a good family relationship.
"Mrs. Sen's" by Jumpha Lahiri
All
the stories in this book were unique in their own way. The author has used all
these characters and situations to represent the Indian culture, feelings,
relationships and obligations. The turning points of the stories as well as the
foreshadowing’s are not always anticipated and that makes them even more
intriguing to the reader.
Mrs. Sen’s story is quite interesting. She somehow is a representation of all Indian women who have immigrated; of women who weren’t married with love; of housewives and great cooks. She begins her work as a babysitter of this little kid who is always joyful and very smart. Always wanting to learn and know more as well as very observant. He often compares his mother’s action to those of Mrs.Sen’s. He values this woman and her strength but more than anything he understands her real feelings. He sees through her and the fact that she is unhappy with her life, her marriage and everything else immigration has to offer. One moment in which her unhappiness is reflected when she and her husband are taking a picture and the boy tells them to get closer but they don’t. Moments like these really mark someone’s soul and even shape their concepts of what really is love if you can’t even stay closer to your partner. In the end she has a car accident in which results of her dismissal of being the little boy’s babysitter. But this thing drives her into a greater sadness and she goes to her shell again and closes there.
Overall this story made me have mixed feelings but I enjoyed getting a broader perspective of Indian culture and knowing more of these kinds of characters.

Week XIV/ XV assignment
''Interpreter of Maladies' by Jhumpa Lahiri
This book is written by
Jumpa Lahiri who is an American
author known for her short stories, novels and essays. Just like this book which have inside 9 short
story. All of this story talks about
different themes but the one that I will describe is the short story called “Sexy”. This story
is about a twenty two year old woman called Miranda who breaks down her affair
with a married Indian man named Dev. Although one of Miranda's work friends is
an Indian woman named Laxmi, , tells her about her cousin, whose husband had
fallen in love with a woman he had met in a plane. Miranda is an adolescent in
the adult world. She recently graduated from college and is exploring the real
world outside by herself. Miranda knows very little about India and its
culture. Miranda t met Dev a week
later, as she was browsing through the cosmetics department. He was described
as well-dressed and handsome. At first, Miranda and Dev spent every night
together. Unlike any other of Miranda's exes, he payed for everything, always
holds the door open and also reaches across a restaurant table to kiss her hand.
The couple go to movies, restaurants, and bars. It is at the Mapparium that Dev
say to her, "You're sexy." It is the first time that a man has said
this to her. She is an innocent girl who think that is really beautiful and sexy and this is the first time that she feel in this way because never before she listen a
thing like that. The next time she is called 'sexy' it is by Rohin, a seven
year old boy. In this context, Miranda begins to realise that physical
attraction to each other is not real love.In this moment she understand that relationship between her and Dev can not countinue. I think that the
author named this story “Sexy” because
the protagonist who is Miranda is a victim of sexuality because Dev use her for
his own satisfaction.I like this short story because the author have explain in
a good way the theme of this story. The word “Sexy” is the word which in her contex contain different element such
as infidelity ,morality and relationship. Miranda understand that this
relationship is something wrong and she learn from this thing. We should learn
from this story because not every person that treat you in a good way is your
friend and this story show it in a perfectly way. This is a story of learning from our mistakes and how
our own decisions can influence others.
Assignment 14-15
Interpreter of Maladies
Something that always attracts me in a book, poetry are the
titles, because they are like the key of the story or the mystery to be
unraveled.”Interpreter of maladies”,who in the story is our main
character:Mr.Kapasi, but who is also a travel guide. The story isn’t just about
him but also is focused in the marriage of Mr Das with Mrs. Das and to the
interpretation of Mr.Kapasi to their relantishiop.Marriage means that the
couple shoud understand each other, but in this case there is no communication among them , so how should we call their relantishiop? It maybe can be an
arrangement because they have a child.A child that even is not the son of Mrs. Das but of one of his friends.
On the other hand we have Mrs. Kapasi ,who unlike the couple is a good
communicator, because his jobs depends on the ability of communication but alike
them he is lonely.I mentioned many times:communication because is the main
theme of the story but also it can be “a tool” that people could use for
different things to work.I think that communication is the message, because a
friendship could work if there is communication,a marriage could work if there is
understanding and finally the world can work if there is communication among
people.
Assignment 14-15.
This book by Jumpha Lahiri, was full of stories one that i really liked was the first one named a temporary matter. From the title i understand that it has to do with something temporary that dont last forever. This story speaks about a couple which are called Shukumar, and Shoba .At the begining, the author has open the story using the words five days without electricity .Actually no lights means darkness for this house.it seems that the relation between the couple wasnt good and maybe this "darkness" will bring them together. What was the problem of this distance? After i read it all realise that their child had died and they suffered a lot this disaster the lack of child. This is very painful for them even though for those who read. In fact they tried to rekindle their marriage but unfortunately ,their marriage was destinated to fail because the reason was lack of love, and lack of communication .I liked this book because it gives the message that nothing lasts forever and we should be able to face the problems that life give us and never give up.
