Week XIV/ XV assignment

''Interpreter of Maladies''

This book is written by Jhumpa Lahiri and it is a collection of 9 short stories. It is a wonderful book and each story has a different meaning and it gives us  a different message. I will focus on the short story of the ''Interpreter of Maladies''. The main personage is Mr.Kapasi because the whole short story speaks about him and the family that are visiting the country of their heritage. The family are Indian Americans and the book of Jhumpa Lahiri speaks about Indian American people. When I started to read it, it was given a different point of the book but when I finished I understood why it has the title'' Interpreter of Maladies''. An interesting title and it means that one man is the interpreter of the human body maladies. He started to do this job when his son was sick and to afford the expenses he started the job as an interpreter but suddenly one day his son died in the arms of his wife.
As  a theme we can mention motherhood, treason. Treason is a theme because it has an impact on the relationship between Mr.Dan and Mrs.Dan, she had been pregnant before she met him and that the boy was not his child. Motherhood is another theme because their mother is not close enough with her children.
''The little girl stuck out a hand. “Mine too. Mommy, do mine too.” “Leave me alone,” Mrs. Das said, blowing on her nail and turning her body slightly. “You’remaking me mess up.”
We understand that she is distant from her children and  maybe she loves them in  her own way.
Also, another thing surprised me the most when she said to Mr.Kapasi to interpret the treason that she had done to her husband. He was an interpreter of maladies not human actions.
