This is a short story that gives us different emotions because it has a deep meaning and makes us think more about the characters and the events that happen inside the story. In my opinion the main theme on this story is selfishness because is based on the two main characters who are Ms. Shiftlet and Lucynell. They are trying to take advantage of each other to further themselves in life. Mr. Shiftlet wanted to get a new car and he understood exactly what to do and on the other hand a mother who want to give up from her child because she is a disabled person and want to marry her with a person that she doesn't knows. They both abandon Lucynell, trading personal connection and compassion for material goods. The girl in this story is treated as an object because no one cares about her even her own mother and this hurts to much. Also the irony in this story is present because the fate is not fair with the girl that firstly her mother wanted to marry her with an unknown man and in the end her husband abandoned her in the restaurant. I think that everyone should be equal because even the disabled people have feelings like us.
