The Life You Save May Be Your Own
The main theme of this story is Selfishness. Its
somehow ironic seeing the two main characters of the story
taking advantage of one another for their own benefits. Mr. Shiftlet just
wanted to get a new car and he understood exactly what Mrs. Crater desired the
most, was to get rid of her mentally unstable daughter. They both treated her
as an object. He wanted an innocent girl that wouldn’t sass or talk back to him
unlike the other one’s whom he called trash. Lucynell’s mother was more than
happy to give to this man her daughter without thinking it twice. A man whom
she didn’t know anything about and as he would often say “ no one can know what
a man holds in his heart”. This story helps demonstrate the way women were
treated back then and what was the general conception of their way of being. I
think it is absolutely fair to name our mentally ill character a victim because
her persona was just bought, sold, used and abandoned by her mother and then
legal husband. Her being as an individual was so worthless that could’ve been
traded with a car. A vehicle for a human being soul. This fact is just repulsive.
